Functional Materials
At the Centre for Functional Materials, we focus on the future. We are a team of specialists who solve commercial tasks and work on research and development projects.
We solve tasks within material characterization, nano-coating and laser microprocessing. In parallel, we work within three main areas: Energy systems, Printed electronics, Smart textiles and Power-to-X.
Innovation is our everyday life, and our solutions equip companies for competitive production both now and in the future. We help the business community create green methods, smarter and better products and flexible production.

Our areas of expertise:
MATERIAL EXAMINATIONS, E.G. IDENTIFICATION
The Danish Technological Institute has one of Denmark's most well-equipped characterisation laboratories. We are DANAK accredited to examine unknown material and identify foreign objects, and our specialists can precisely isolate and identify foreign objects and impurities. We are audited and approved for this type of examination by several of the largest pharmaceutical companies in Denmark.
Our competencies in material analysis can also be beneficial to material and product development.
- Surface analysis and chemical characterization
- Identification of foreign material - DANAK accredited investigation
- IMAGING - Tomography
PRODUCTION OF NANOCOATINGS
Does your product lack protection against water or oil? We develop nano-coatings that chemically bind to the surface of the product so that it is not destroyed during use. For example, components for microphones or headsets that must cope with saliva and sweat without the liquids penetrating the electronics.
Our production of nanocoatings is ISO 9001:2015 certified, which ensures that we always produce reproducible nanocoatings of the highest quality. We are proud that year after year we are our customers' preferred supplier of nanocoatings, which give their products better performance and longer service life.
- Protect your product with nano-coating (ISO 9001 certified production)
- Case: Nanocoating specialist knowledge gave greater customer satisfaction [DK]
PRINTED ELECTRONICS
Printed electronics are the electronics of the future! By manufacturing electronic components and conductive tracks with printing technologies, functionality such as sensors and light can be incorporated into flexible and uneven surfaces and materials. Printed electronics can make products lighter, more flexible, and use fewer resources than classic electronics.
We have expertise in incorporating printed electronics into composites, textiles and curved surfaces. Printed electronics can add value to your products - gain access to our infrastructure and state-of-the-art technology by working together with the Danish Technological Institute.
ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC TEST
Electronic product compliance and testing ensure that the product is safe, reliable, and that it complies with existing standards. Our team can perform tests according to electronic testing standards and can guide you through the process, whether you are an expert or know nothing about testing electronics.
With our experts, you can make sure that your product is safe and reliable for your customers, and we can diagnose problems with electronic devices or system, and make suggestions for repairs.
NANOMATERIALER, FX CATALYSIS
We are experts in the development and analysis of nanomaterials, whether it is to examine or design the structure or functionality of the material.
Part of our expertise is in catalytically active particles to understand their functional properties. We can help you determine the performance characteristics, including performance, efficiency and structure of the catalyst, that are essential to understanding and optimizing your products. For this, we have developed a number of different catalysis test systems, for example exhaust catalysts, fuel cell catalysts, electrolysis etc.
POWER-TO-X, E.G. THERMAL STORAGE
Power-to-X makes up a large part of the effort in the center's projects. The goal is to make energy storage and conversion technologies more efficient, therefore maintaining and expanding Denmark's international leading position as a supplier and manufacturer of components. In the projects, we will develop, test and demonstrate new efficient components in four areas of activity: Power-to-X, electricity for transport, electricity for heat and electrical and thermal storage.
The Danish Technological Institute will also develop services for testing and demonstrating components within Power-to-X. They are targeted at the business community and are made possible through the testing and laboratory facilities available to the department.
ENERGY SYSTEMS, E.G. FUEL CELLS FOR DRONES
Our development of energy systems, for example fuel cells, is based on micro- and nanotechnology with a focus on the overall system. Among other things, we focus on how new energy systems, smarter sensor and vision technology as well as materials technology can be integrated into drones so that they can be used in new areas. We help you on your way from prototype to initial pilot production, no matter what energy solution your product idea contains.
LASER CUTTING
As some of the few in Denmark, our laboratories are equipped with laser machines for very precise machining in materials. With our femtosecond laser, for example, thin materials can be machined without causing thermal damage. We specialize in the manufacture of holes and laser cutting in thin plastic and metal products with a thickness of less than one millimeter. The laser cutting is customized based on your product and needs, and we can cut holes with great precision with a size of between 5-500 micrometers.
