ATEX and materials testing - ESD testing
Correct flooring can remedy static electricity. ESD means ”ElectroStatic Discharge”.
Sensitive electronic components can be damaged by electrostatic discharges from people being "charged" in normal physical activity. In addition, these discharges can ignite explosive gas atmospheres (ATEX).
The correct flooring can help remedy the problem with electrostatic discharge. The Danish Working Environment Authority's guidance C.0.9 requires antistatic floor coverings in certain areas.
What should you do?
Today it is possible to purchase antistatic clothing and footwear / safety footwear. The standards EN 345-1 Footwear and EN 1149-1 Protective Clothing, specify the requirements and rules for the antistatic properties of the products and any labelling/marking? Also the flooring must have the correct properties, otherwise proper footwear and clothing serve no purpose.
Ordinary concrete floorings with an earth-connected reinforcement usually have sufficient conductivity. If other floor coverings are used or the concrete floor is surface-treated, it may adversely affect the conductivity. This may result in the person being electrostatically charges, which subsequently may lead to hazardous situations or it may damage sensitive equipment such as e.g. electronics.
Danish Technological Institute offers an impartial test and measurement of the electrostatic properties of the flooring.
The measurement is made according to the standard EN 61340-4-1, which deals with test methods for floor coverings and electrostatic properties of mounted floors.
Once the measurement is completed, all relevant test results will be used in the final assessment report.
The measurement report is prepared by Danish Technological Institute as a final part of the assignment.
The report helps to document the floor's antistatic properties and can subsequently be used to determine if any changes are required or to document whether the applicable requirements are met.
