Project - Super supermarkets

Purpose of project
The main focus of the Super Supermarkets project is to evaluate, demonstrate and implement the full potential of district heating production and electricity grid system services already available, but unexploited in supermarkets.
Objectives
Basic recycle heat recovery has been demonstrated and implemented in approximately ten supermarkets in Denmark. The Super Supermarkets project will optimize and standardize this technology, and expand it with two extra levels of energy system integration. First level is to utilize the auxiliary compressor capacity in the supermarkets (400 MW) as additional heat pump capacity in the district heating networks. Second level is to aggregate supermarket cooling and heat production systems and activate them as an electricity grid service to help level out the fluctuations of wind power.
Activities
The project is divided into three main phases:
- Pre-studies and "state of the art" definitions
- Demonstration in three existing supermarkets and evaluation of demonstration results
- SuperBrugsen in Bramming together with Bramming Fjernvarme
- Fakta in Gilleleje together with Gilleleje Fjernvarme
- SuperBrugsen in Vindinggård together with Mølholm Varmeværk
- Book of guildelines and intensive targeted communication to all interest groups to secure a nationwide roll out and long term follow up on results
