Project - Scalable downstream processing of fermentation derived cellulose

Project start 1st September 2024. Project end 28th February 2025.

The project is supported by the EU's regional funds and the Danish Business Promotion Agency, through the Business Lighthouse project Biosolutions Zealand II - Innovation and Scaling, which is administered by Food & Bio Cluster Denmark in collaboration with Erhvervshus Sjælland, Kalundborg Symbiosis and Knowledge Hub Zealand. Funds under Biosolutions Zealand II aim to develop new innovative solutions that strengthen companies' international competitiveness.

In this project, Cellugy will collaborate with the Biosolutions Technology Center (DTI-BTC), to develop a more cost-effective and scalable downstream process (DSP), enabling Cellugy to meet its production targets and expand the use of bacterial cellulose in various industries. By overcoming the current limitations in downstream processing and drying, Cellugy can streamline its operations, reduce costs, and increase the availability of bacterial cellulose for diverse applications, ultimately contributing to the growth and adoption of this sustainable biopolymer in the market.

About the partners

Cellugy is a Danish biotechnology company with a platform technology centered in producing and formulating high crystalline fermentation-derived cellulose (bacterial cellulose/EcoFLEXY), into different applications. Cellugy is exploring new markets with their product EcoFLEXY RP as a multi-functional ingredient in the personal care and cosmetics industry. The product is natural and non-GMO-derived, fossil-free, high performing in challenging formula, and biodegradable with lower cost needed per formula (cost-in use).

Danish Technological Institute's new Biosolutions Technology Center (BTC) aims to support the development of sustainable technologies and processes in Denmark and other countries. DTI’s role in this project is to test, validate and optimize downstream processing ideas in pilot scale.  The experts at DTI have competence in the areas of fermentation, biorefinery and downstream processes, product analysis and consumer test, among many others.
