GeckoCIR: Circular Retrofitting for Sustainable Industrialization

GeckoCIR, led by UCPH, is a follow-up project of the Danida window 2 project Gecko. GeckoCIR is a transdisciplinary research project which aims to develop circular industrial networks and eco-industrial parks in Kenya, and the core focus is on upcycling food side-streams and developing circular business cases among food companies. Besides that, GeckoCIR will also research deeper into other upcycling opportunities for industrial side-streams combining business, policy, and natural sciences (biorefinery, biotech, food, chemistry and material research).
DTI as a partner of this project will contribute to cascading sidestreams, which is key to the circular economy principles, i.e., maintaining resources at their highest value throughout the process. Downcycling minimization and highest possible value creation will be investigated and evaluated. DTI, together with Danish and Kenya partners will investigate and develop processes for e.g., extraction of valuable bioactive compounds such as proteins, dietary fibers, antioxidants out of food-sidestreams and turn these into healthy food products as well as other value-added products in the field of biomaterials or biofertilizers.
The project outcomes will contribute to an efficient science-based methodology for the creation of circular hubs in existing industrial areas in Kenya. The long-term research target is to develop an algorithm for industrial symbiosis, where the optimal matching and co-location of industries can be assessed as a basis for designing high-circular hubs.
