EMG sleeve prototype: A case study with PreCure

At the Danish Technological Institute, we have cooperated with PreCure to optimize an innovative EMG sleeve prototype.

PreCure is a Danish company specializing in developing smart wearables that help prevent musculoskeletal injuries in the workplace. Their innovative products, such as the MLI® Elbow, are designed to monitor muscle strain and provide real-time feedback to users, helping them adjust their movements and avoid injuries. By integrating advanced sensor technology with user-friendly interfaces, PreCure aims to create solutions that enhance occupational health and safety.

What is EMG and why is it Important?

EMG stands for Electromyography. It's a technique used to measure the electrical activity produced by muscles when they contract. This information is crucial for:

  1. Assessing muscle health and function
  2. Diagnosing neuromuscular disorders
  3. Monitoring muscle fatigue and overuse
  4. Guiding rehabilitation processes

In workplace settings, EMG can help prevent musculoskeletal disorders by identifying risky movement patterns or excessive muscle strain before they lead to injury.

The Challenge

Previously, Precure's EMG sleeve relied on silver electrodes. This production method was labor-intensive and not suitable for mass production. The company needed a more efficient solution that could scale up while maintaining quality.

Our approach

The Danish Technological Institute developed carbon-based EMG electrodes that can be mass-produced using additive manufacturing techniques. This approach allows for efficient, cost-effective production while maintaining high quality and consistency.

Key Improvements

  • Washable: The new sleeve design can withstand more wash cycles, enhancing its practicality for everyday use.
  • Sustainability: By utilizing sustainable biobased ink, the sleeve offers an eco-friendly option without compromising performance.
  • Mass-producible: Our additive manufacturing process enables large-scale production, reducing costs and increasing availability.

Benefits

  • Real-time monitoring: The sleeve allows for continuous tracking of muscle activity during daily tasks or specific exercises.
  • Preventive care: By identifying patterns of muscle strain or overuse, the sleeve can help prevent work-related musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Improved rehabilitation: For patients recovering from injuries, the sleeve provides detailed feedback on muscle function and recovery progress.
By combining our expertise in printed electronics with Precure's healthcare insights, we're creating wearable solutions that can significantly improve health outcomes and reduce workplace injuries.
