Advanced Energy Storage Conference

New technologies and the status of research in a green future

Energy storage is gaining increasing societal relevance as fluctuating solar and wind energy are increasingly required to meet Denmark's energy needs.

Danish Technological Institute aims to provide an overview of new technologies and the current status of research in energy storage through the conference on Advanced Energy Storage. The focus varies from year to year, but battery storage, advanced thermal storage, and integration with the power grid are among the topics.

Energy storage on the way to become the new growth area in the green transition

The establishment of energy storage systems is rapidly growing, with new MWh facilities under development across the country. This growth is primarily driven by new business opportunities in grid services and declining prices for battery systems. However, the energy market is changing rapidly, making it harder than ever to predict the future. This raises questions such as: Is there really a need for all these facilities? Will the markets soon become saturated? Can access to the power grid be guaranteed? And many more.

Thermal energy storage: the key to future sustainable energy systems

High-temperature thermal energy storage is becoming a significant factor in the green transition, with new large-scale projects under development nationwide. This technology allows for storing large amounts of energy as heat at costs often significantly lower than electrochemical batteries. This enables a more efficient utilization of renewable energy sources. With recent technological advancements, the first large-scale pilot plants are now operational, both in Denmark and internationally.

Thermal storage contributes to a more sustainable and efficient future by offering cost-effective solutions that can be scaled to handle large amounts of energy without using rare and critical materials like lithium and cobalt. Although thermal storage is not as efficient as electrochemical batteries for directAE logo UK uden årstal electrical storage, it provides a significant advantage by integrating into a hybrid energy system where excess heat is effectively utilized. This makes it an important component in sector connection between electricity and heating systems.
